    Is it possible to color multiple cells at once?

    Hi again,

    Trying to eliminate the dreaded copy-paste curse as much as possible (having to do dozens of copy pastes).

    So for what its worth, is it possible to color a cell and then have other designated cells colored at the same time with the same color of the source cell? In other words, just like if I wanted for example cell A2, A3 and A4 to display the same value I type into cell A1, I would write =A1 in cells A2, A3 and A4.

    To be clearer - instead of having a function which states to copy the designated cell value, the function would state to copy just the color of the designated cell to other designated cells, regardless of what the values are in each cell or even if the cells have a value at all and are just blank cells.

    Im not talking about standard conditional formatting which relies on the cell contents. I am talking about conditional formatting which relies solely on the color of the cell.

    Is it possible the function exists in the conditional formatting rules manager?

    Thanks everyone,

    JackBlack

    No, it's not possible, at least not with any Excel functions. It might be possible with VBA.

    Conditional formatting rules can only work on the content of a cell, not the formatting thereof.

    Of course, you can multi-select cells (CTRL+click) and colour them together, but this might not suit your purposes.

    The problem is that vba also doesnt "feel" the change of color of 1 cell but only the change of value (of one cell) or the change of selection

    @AliGW

    Thanks. Was hoping I would not have to turn to VBA, since I have no idea how to incorporate the programming it into my workbook.

    I already use CTRL to color all target cells at one. The problem is that then I have to click and drag over all those colored cells and then copy paste them all at once into three other tables using the paste formatting only option. I have to do this a dozen times for 4 sets of 4 tables.

    @LukeReds keep

    Thanks for the code. Problem is that I dont know how to incorporate it into my workbook and also the target cells I keep coloring and then pasting into other tables keep changing. They are not in fixed locations. Im sure that would complicate things (or not)

    Thanks a lot,

    Re: Is it possible to color multiple cells at once?

    Its never the same cells.

    If a program can be created, every cell in the 3 other tables I paste the colors to (from the target table) would need a function stating something like =A2 color, =B2 color and so on for every cell in the target table.

    I attached the empty tables as an example. Every cell in those tables have formulas inside them. The program must not affect the formulas.

    Thanks,

    Uses named ranges (Table_1 to Table_12)

    valid for all the ranges in the sheet

    It would be better to have the tables equally distanced, not like now, 11 rows from the 1st table to the second, 5 rows from 2nd tavle to third and so on

    Re: Is it possible to color multiple cells at once?

    @JohnTopley

    Thanks a fortune! Im sorry to have to be a pest but I have no idea how to import the VBA programming into my file or how to set up the other two buttons for the other 2 sets of 4 tables. I also completely forgot to mention that there is a second worksheet in that workbook (see second tab) with a set of 4 tables with 8 columns and not 10 columns where I need the exact same function.

    Since the tables are located in exactly the locations they are located in my workbook the tables are sourced from, I need the buttons located in cells A4, A296 andA589 in the "10 column tables" worksheet and B109 in the "8 column tables" worksheet, otherwise the buttons infringe on other data in other cells.

    The last time 6JazzStringer tried to explain to me how to import the VBA programming, I got confused (I am an analyst not a computer programmer) and instead just copied over my entire workbook into the workbook with the VBA programming that he sent me. I cant do that anymore, since then I lose the VBA programming 6JazzStringer sent me.

    Sorry to be such a pest. I would pay you guys for all this free work if I could.

    @lukereds

    Thank you too. The tables are spaced like that because they match the exact locations my original tables are located in those two spreadsheets in the workbook.

    Much appreciated, guys.

    Just had an idea - to save us a lot of time, I could download the workbook 6JazzStringer sent me where the tables are located in exactly the same locations together with the VBA programming he sent me and upload it to this thread. Then if you incorporated the 4 buttons into that workbook, I could then recopy all my work over to the workbook with both VBA programming.

    Is that a more convenient solution for you?

    Thanks,

    JackBlack

    @John Topley

    Oky doky, I uploaded 6jazzstringer's workbook with his VBA program. The tables are in the exact same locations as the workbook you programmed for tables 1, 2, 3 and 4. Now I just need the same function applied to the 3 other sets of 4 tables in the two spreadsheets. You can see exactly the cells I need the four VBA buttons to be located in.

    Once that is done, I will transfer all my data into the workbook.

    Thrilled to finally be relieved of repetative work.

    Much appreciated,

    JackBlack
